Our Name

AGUIPO… pronounced AAH – GEE – POO

Believe it or not, it’s not just a random name.  It is actually a word.  A Bisaya word commonly used in the province of Bohol.

Philippines, with its 7,107 islands (during low tide!), is broken into 3 main regions:  Luzon (north), Visayas (central), Mindanao (south).  There are over 120 dialects – many are as different as Spanish and Chinese.  The dialects in the central region generally sound similar – think of it like English: British, American, Australian, Irish, Jamaican…  Similar yet different but you might understand each other.  Collectively these dialects in the Visayas region is called Bisaya.  There is no “v” in the Filipino alphabet, so Visayas become Bisaya.

The province of Bohol is an island in the Visayas region.  Collectively the dialects in Bohol is called Boholano.   Fine, it’s confusing… but spend enough time with Filipinos or stay in the Philippines long enough and it will all make sense.  Accept it for now, Aguipo is a bisaya word.  So what does it mean?

Ever see wood burning?  See the red glowing hot coal?  That is an aguipo.  It radiates a substantial amount of heat long after fire has been extinguished.
